She changed her birth year to 1901, 1903, and 1910. 

 

Zora Neale Hurston and her step mother did not get along, and often got into fights. Zora almost killed Mattie in a fist-fight, and eventually left home because of the dislike for her stepmother. 

 

She always claimed to be ten years younger after graduating high school in Baltimore, Maryland.
